Hodag swimmers win sectional, head to state

Rhinelander High School swimmers traveled Saturday to Wisconsin Rapids, one of four host sites for the Division 2 sectionals. Winners of each event received automatic berths to the state swim meet. The Hodags continued to impress as the team won the sectional meet by one point and the majority of Hodag swimmers recorded person bests.
Malia Francis won the 100-yard butterfly and the 100-yard backstroke, Makenna Winnicki is also headed to state with wins in the 200-yard IM and the 500-yard freestyle. The relay team of Francis, Winnicki, Lisa Kennedy and Noelle St. Pierre won the opening 200-yard medley relay; St. Pierre missed the cut in the 100-yard breaststroke by .28 seconds. The 50th Annual WIAA girls swimming and diving championships take place on the UW-Madison campus Nov. 15-16.
