White Cane Day
Members of the Rhinelander Lions Club will hold White Can Day this week. Yellow-vested Lions will be at Trig’s Mall and Walmart 9 a.m.-5 p.m. June 14 and 9 a.m.-1 p.m. June at Trig’s, Walmart and Casa Mexicana. All funds collected are used for vision screenings, Wisconsin Lions Camp, Wisconsin Eye Bank and leader dogs for the blind. International Lions Clubs have been aiding the blind and those with eye deficiencies since 1929, when Helen Keller asked the Lions to be the “Knights of Sight” for those with vision disabilities.
Northwoods Pride Festival
The Northwoods Pride Festival 2019 will take place Saturday, June 29 at Nicolet College Lakeside Center. Festivities for the LGBTQ community will include live music, a community resource fair, drag show and silent auction. Food and beverage vendors are Trig’s Smokehouse and Rhinelander Brewing Company. The event is organized by the Nicolet College Rainbow Hodags, which provides support and education and improve the climate for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer people and community allies. YMCA Hodag Run for Your Life
The 13th Hodag Run for Your Life takes place Saturday, June 22 at Hodag Park. The 10K run will begin at 8:30 a.m., followed by the 5K run/walk and stroller division. The runs will have routes running north into Pine Lake out one Manor Road. A closing ceremony will award medals to the top three male and female finishers in each bracket; top overall male and female will receive a special coveted Hodag award. The free kids Chase the Hodag takes off at 10 a.m.; the first 200 youth participants, age 12 and younger, receive a free race t-shirt and all participants receive a souvenir numbered race bib. Lakeland barbershop concert
The Lakeland Barbershop Chorus will present “Spring into Summer,” its 32nd annual concert at 7 p.m., June 22 at the Campanile Center for the Arts in Minocqua. The concert will feature traditional barbershop and parody songs celebrating the fun of a Northwoods summer. Also performing will be award-winning guest quartet, Kordal Kombat. The traditional Afterglow will take place at the Island City Lanes, for socializing, food, drinks and more barbershop singing. Ticket proceeds provide $1,000 scholarships for two graduating seniors from Rhinelander and Minocqua pursing higher education in the music field. Fireworks fundraiser
The Rhinelander Area Chamber of Commerce is selling 50/50 raffle tickets to benefit Rhinelander’s July 4 fireworks displays. Tickets are on sale at the chamber office and at several other locations through the month of June. The winner will receive a cash prize of half of the proceeds and will be drawn July 1; the other half of the cash will go toward the 2020 fireworks display.
