BOYS SOCCER: Hodags shut out Raiders to open D3 tourney
RHS to face Clintonville in regional final
STAR JOURNAL REPORT
Scoring early and often turned out to be the key Thursday when the top-seeded Rhinelander High School boys soccer team tallied all its goals in the first 20 minutes and recorded a 4-0 victory over No. 8-seeded Medford in the Hodags’ opening WIAA Division 3 Regional game in the field in front of RHS.
The Hodags scored a pair of goals within a minute of each other on two occasions.
RHS’s first goal came on a penalty kick by Jonus Sabani at 6:41, followed by Richie Triplet scoring at 6:56.
Sabani added an unassisted goal 18:48 into the first half before Matthew Von Oepen tallied the Hodags’ final goal assisted by Daniel Ritchie at the 19:24 mark.
RHS ended up with a 20-7 advantage in shots on goal with Josh Randolph recording the shutout win in net.
The Hodags, who improved their overall season record to 15-3-2, will host their regional final at 3:30 p.m. Saturday against No. 4-seeded Clintonville. The winner advances to the Oct. 26 sectional semifinal against the winner between No. 3-seeded New London and No. 2-seeded Amherst/Iola-Scandinavia/Rosholt with the highest remaining seed hosting that game.
