HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Hodags shut out in first half, fall to Hatchets

After trailing 22-0 at halftime Friday night, the Rhinelander High School varsity football team could only muster two second-half touchdowns and lost in non-conference action at Tomahawk, 30-14.
Following a scoreless first quarter, the Hatchets took a 2-0 lead on a safety with 7:45 left before halftime and then added three touchdowns going into intermission on a 9-yard pass from Easton Phalin to Max Bembinster and runs of 49 and 30 yards by Phalin.
The Hodags got on the scoreboard with 2:14 left in the third quarter on a 2-yard run by quarterback Logan Freund.
RHS pulled within one score with 11:06 left in the fourth quarter on a 17-yard touchdown run by Drake Martin. The extra point cut the deficit to 22-14.
Tomahawk closed out the scoring with 8:38 left in the game on a 19-yard touchdown pass from Phalin to Jackson List. Those two also connected on the 2-point conversion to extend the Hatchets’ lead to 30-14.
Tomahawk outgained RHS in total offense, 317-204 yards.
The Hatchets accounted for 233 of their yards on the ground with Phalin leading the team in rushing with 112 yards on 16 carries and two touchdowns. Phalin also completed seven of 13 passes for 84 yards and two touchdowns.
The Hodags recorded most of their net yards in the air with Freund completing 11 of 28 passes for 138 yards with no touchdowns and one interception. On the ground, Martin ran for 104 yards on 25 carries with a touchdown.
RHS, which saw its overall season record drop to 0-2, plays its first home game of the season this coming Friday against another non-conference opponent, Wausau East.
