BOYS HOCKEY: Hodags lose GNC opener at Waupaca, 6-2

STAR JOURNAL REPORT

The Rhinelander High School varsity boys hockey team wasn’t able to get on the scoreboard until the final period Saturday when the Hodags lost their Great Northern Conference opener at Waupaca, 6-2.

The Comets tallied their first goal with three seconds left in the opening period when Cody Rasmussen scored assisted by Hunter Smith and Jack Menzies.

Waupaca extended the lead to 3-0 in the second period when Dakota Johnson scored unassisted and Rasmussen tallied his second goal assisted by Mitchell Trzebiatowski.

The Comets pulled in front by four goals with 8:25 left to play when Menzies scored assisted by  Trzebiatowski and Rasmussen.

RHS’s first goal came with 6:01 left in the game when Logan Wild scored assisted by Freddie Wisner and Tyler Blomdahl.

Max Menzies put Waupaca back in front by four goals when he scored unassisted before the Hodags’ Cole Spaulding scored assisted by Wisner and Wild.

The Comets closed out the scoring with 1:17 left in the game on a goal from Max Menzies assisted by Jack Menzies.

Bret Berens recorded the win in goal for Waupaca with Seth Stafford picking up the loss in net for RHS.

The Hodags, who dropped to 0-1 in the GNC and 1-1 overall, return to action Tuesday at Mosinee before hosting another conference game Thursday against Northland Pines.
