The Unquiet Librarian: Get your library card this month. And use it
By Virginia Roberts
Director, Rhinelander District Library
You may have read or heard Rhinelander District Library is accepting food for fines this month. It’s true. Your library will take canned or boxed goods and for each unexpired good, give you a dollar off your fine—up to $5 or five items and turn those items over to the Rhinelander Food Pantry. But, wait—there is an ulterior motive. I’m sure you suspected it.
Librarians are crafty, clever, intelligent, and because of this, dangerous—so of course there is an ulterior motive. Now, I know what you’re thinking: What could possibly be the ulterior motive for getting someone with a fine to pay it off with food or anything else?
It’s very simple. We’d like you to come to the library. We’d like to see you. Talk with you. Have you enjoy a visit. But—wait—it’s so much more than that…
We would like you to use your library card. If you don’t have any library fines because you don’t have a card, we want you to sign up for a library card. If you have a card and don’t use it—we want you back—and bring your friends to get cards, too!
We want you to be in the library. We want you to see your library. We’re busy. We’re happy to see you. And, we’re here to help. Everyone is coming to your library, every age, boys, girls, men, women, all nations. Your library has so much to offer you—the stuff you know about, movies, a great story time program, books of all types on all kinds of subjects, and stuff you don’t—comic books, places to sit, information, public computers, and even craft classes, games and puzzles!
Why? Well the library is here for your use. In fact, parts of it work online twenty-four/seven. If you don’t get some enjoyment out of the place, you’re missing out. If you can’t make it here due to age or health reasons—we’ll even come to you.
So, perhaps you have heard, September is library card signup month. We’re also taking food for fines to benefit the Rhinelander Food Pantry. Because your librarians want you to enjoy the best bargain of our community, the Rhinelander District Library.
