Obituary: Forrest “Twig” Metz

Forrest “Twig” Metz, age 63 died unexpectedly July 11, 2015 on Sturgeon Lake in Ontario, Canada. Twig was born on November 9, 1951 in Rhinelander to Claude and Rosemary (Jarvis) Metz.

Twig grew up in the Rhinelander area spending much of his time on Crescent Lake with family and friends, also helping his parents run the Rustic Aire. After graduating from RHS, attending Nicolet College, UW Stevens Point, and Lakehead University in Thunder Bay Ont. he married Cynthia (Cook), together they had two children.

In 1978 his father Claude passed away leaving the family owned Marie’s Bay Outpost Camp on Sturgeon Lake in northern Ont. Twig began spending summers entertaining guests at on Sturgeon Lake and winters mostly in the Rhinelander area working construction. Some time was also spent mining and working on core drilling rigs in Canada. As much as Twig knew hard work, he also knew how to enjoy life and its simpler beauties, which eventually led to him living at camp year round. Accessible only by boat, miles from any civilization, summers were spent creating a lifetime of memories to all those that had visited him whether for world class fishing, moose hunting, or just to get away at a place with no worries. Winters required him to endure harsh cold and wind, months of solitude (other than the many animal friends that he had gotten to know very well) in a drafty log cabin he and his father hand built, stoking the old barrel stove.

All those fortunate enough to have met Twig will never forget him and all those who spent any amount of time with him will tell stories of the experience for generations to come. Please join the family to remember Twig on Saturday August 1, 2015 at the Carlson Funeral Home (715-369-1414 / www.carlsonfh.com) from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m. with a gathering to follow.

Twig will be forever missed by his mother Rose (Robert) Campbell, Thunder Bay Ont.; wife Linda (Kirsch) Metz, Rhinelander; brother Richard Sr. (Sally) Metz Rhinelander; sister Penny Mason Appleton; son Troy (Tina) Metz, Poplar; daughter Sara (Ryan) Berghammer, Rhinelander and many nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and step children.
