Our Turn: Not so scary Halloween trail

It’s already the middle of October. A few weeks away is Halloween, and one week before that? The Not So Scary Halloween Trail. The Stoney Pines Trail behind the YMCA in Rhinelander will be transformed into a festive area where kids can go through and Trick-or-Treat at the different booths, and maybe take part in an activity hosted by the booth’s creators.
Looking back, this is NCSS’ third year participating in the trail. The first year our theme was Nintendo, and we had a ‘Mario Kart Raceway’. People dressed as characters from various Nintendo game series and handed out candy and raced kids on the raceway. The second year- last year- the theme we had was Music. The group dressed as various artists or things related to music, and on top of handing out candy, some people got onto a wooden stage and danced with the kids. It was good, people stayed active, because it can- and did- get really cold on a late October night! With our Music theme, the NCSS group won 2nd place and a $25 gift card from Walmart, so we chose to get pizza and soda to celebrate. 1st place, which went to Fantastic Sam’s with ‘The Lorax’, received a free pool party.
So what does NCSS have up our sleeve this year? Giving everything away right now would ruin the surprise, so we will leave you with one hint. Our theme involves a place where dreams come true and magic happens. If your family is looking for a fun time to go out and get some treats, come down to the Y! The Not So Scary Halloween takes place on Oct. 24 from 5-7 p.m., plus it’s a free event. Various groups and businesses will have stops on the trail, so it’s a lot of fun packed in a safe, ‘not so scary’ environment.
