Business Close-up: Eichenholz Amish Furniture
A piece of hand-made furniture can be a treasured family heirloom for generations to come, and that’s what you’ll find when visiting Eichenholz Amish Furniture. Located in Minocqua, this quaint and welcoming home décor store is owned and operated by Carrie and Brad Ort.
The Orts have a unique business with their store. They take orders on furniture pieces and have them custom made by 20 different Amish craftsmen in the Ohio/Indiana area.
“People can order what type of wood they want and what type of stain,” said Carrie. “Even specialty pieces that have to fit into certain dimensions can be made by these Amish craftsmen.”
While the furniture on display reveals just what kind of beautiful work these Amish woodworkers are capable of, they are also for sale. There are dining room sets with silky smooth finishes, dressers with unusual wood inlays and curio cabinets revealing unusual designs. In fact, there are many, many different styles of furniture available and customers are welcome to browse through a book and choose just exactly what they want, whether that’s a custom desk, a dining room table, a baby crib, hutches and buffets or a bedroom set.
Quality made outdoor furniture is also available. Adirondack-style chairs constructed of cedar come in glider models as well as rockers and are displayed just outside the front door where visitors can try them out. And for those looking for a real rustic look, the bentwood hickory chairs will fill that bill. These are not only unique, but comfortable as well.
In addition, cooks will appreciate the large selection of wooden utensils and spoons available. These are made from hard maple which has a low resistance to bacteria growth. There is also a large selection of Amish-made baskets available.
In addition to the quality furniture here, there are plenty of other Amish goodies as well. Take, for instance, the pies. Each one is baked with more than a pound and a half of filling. Some flavors include raspberry and peach, strawberry rhubarb and blueberry, to name a few. There is also Amish pasta available as well as popcorn, popcorn flavorings and other tempting goodies like the homemade pecan crunchies. In fact, customers can choose a basket and any items in the store, and Carrie will gladly put together the perfect handpicked gift and even ship it.
Candle lovers will also find Eichenholz a great place to shop. There are locally made Northwoods cake candles as well as Wood Wick candles available, in addition to electric candles which are really unique. These are made with a wax cylinder that is placed over a tiny electric candle. These cylinders come in a variety of decorating motifs and can be changed to depict different seasons or holidays.
One decorating idea gaining popularity is the fit-together puzzle pieces that can be hung on a wall depicting family photos and sayings. These fit together to expand into bigger displays when an important family happening takes place, such as a baby being born or a marriage.
There are quality children’s books available, as well as wooden plaques with unique sayings, beautiful and breathtaking hand-made Amish quilts and even Amish chimes. Hand-crafted cribbage and game boards are also offered.
