From the Coordinator: Community abuzz as summer activities approach

Wow, what a long winter we had. I’m not sure if spring was ever really here, but with the recent 80-plus degree weather, I’m confident that summer is here to stay, at least for the next few months. It feels like the prolonged cold and snowy weather lulled us into thinking that we had a lot more time to prepare for summer than what we actually did. June is now upon us, which means most of us are in full swing and there is a lot to get in order for the upcoming months.

As Community Education Coordinator for the School District of Rhinelander, I’ve had the privilege to work with many community organizations, groups and businesses. There are some extraordinary people in this community who work hard at making it the best it can be. This summer is jam-packed with several fun-filled activities that are brought to us by volunteers who offer a great deal of time and effort.

To help keep track of all the exciting happenings, I compiled a “Rhinelander Area Summer Family Fun Guide” that highlights many of the wonderful opportunities for families either living in or vacationing in the Rhinelander area. This guide includes activities brought to us by: Downtown Rhinelander Inc., the Chamber of Commerce, Oneida UW Extension, the Rhinelander Public Library, Hodag Lanes, The YMCA of the Northwoods, Nicolet College, Family Resource Connection, Old School Arts and Learning Center, Concerts on the Riverwalk, Hodag Water Shows, Hodag Farmer’s Market, Big Brothers Big Sisters, museums and others.

Some of this summer’s highlights include Art Fair on the Courthouse Lawn June 14, the Boom Lake Log Jam from June 20 to 22, The Oneida County Fair from July 31 to Aug. 3, and Potato Fest Aug. 30. All of these activities could use your help. Please consider donating some time to help with these amazing events.

There is no reason to ever say “I’m bored” on a sunny summer day in the Northwoods. Visit the community section of the School District of Rhinelander website at www.rhinelander.k12.wi.us/community/ to view the “Family Fun Guide” and use it to help plan your summer months.
