Four aldermanic seats, mayor’s office up for election in ‘26

Posted

The most senior member of the Rhinelander Common Council has announced he will not see re-election in 2026. Alderman David Holt, who has represented District 6 for the last eight years, made the announcement during the council’s Nov. 10 meeting.
“Two terms is enough. Eight years is a long time,” Holt stated during the public comment portion of the meeting. “I wanted to give ample notice to District 6 so that anybody else who might be thinking about running can have time to think about it.”
Holt, who will serve out his term through April, reflected positively on his time in office and the city’s progress during his tenure.
“It’s been an honor and a pleasure to serve the city and the community,” he said. “I’m proud of where the city is now compared to where it was when I first sat in that chair.”
He also expressed confidence that his successor would find the role more manageable than when he began, crediting the smooth operation of city government and council.
Aldermanic districts 2,4 and 8 are also up for election in April 2026 as is the mayor’s seat. The current incumbent alderpersons are LeeAnn Felton (Dist. 2), Bob Lueder (Dist. 4) and Steven Jopek (District 8). The sitting mayor is Kris Hanus.
Prospective candidates can take out nomination papers starting on Dec. 1. Papers must be returned by Jan. 6, 2026.
