Community celebrates CAVOC’s 50th anniversary

Posted

The School District of Rhinelander celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the Cedric A. Vig Outdoor Classroom (CAVOC) on Saturday, Sept. 26. Established in 1976 through an 80-acre land exchange with the Samoset Council of the Boy Scouts of America, CAVOC now encompasses 160 acres and has served generations of students, staff, volunteers, and community members as an environmental education and recreation center. It is named for the late educator, writer and naturalist Cedric A. Vig, who served as Superintendent of Schools in Rhinelander from 1954 to 1977. The celebration included tours, nature activities, scavenger hunts, art projects, acorn collecting, a chili contest, photos with Smokey Bear and the Hodag, a playscape, campfire and s’mores, merchandise, and complimentary food and beverages.
