Hodag soccer season ends
Rhinelander loses 5-4 to Lakeland following a shootout
Regional playoffs for boys soccer began Tuesday with the Lakeland T-Birds taking on the Hodags at Mike Webster stadium. The two teams played evenly in their two conference games with the Hodags winning the first meeting 2-1. In the second meeting the teams tied at 1.
The playoff game again showed how close the teams are; after 90 minutes of regulation play the score was knotted at 3. After the two 10-minute overtime periods the score did not change, although both teams had chances to win.
As per WIAA regulations after 110 minutes of play it would come down to a shootout from the penalty kick line. Each team puts five players to the line alternating which team kicks. The Hodags were first and four of the five players for the Hodags made the kicks past the keeper. Miles Wentworth’s kick went wide off the post on the right side, needing one of the T-Birds to miss to go to another set of penalty kicks. Unfortunately for the Hodags, all five of the Lakeland kickers got the ball past keeper Gavin Ostermann to win on penalty kicks 4-5.
