BOYS HOCKEY: Hodags edge Comets, 4-3
RHS improves to 3-0 overall, 1-0 in GNC
STAR JOURNAL REPORT
A late third-period goal by sophomore Danny Zuiker broke a tie Saturday to give the Rhinelander High School varsity boys hockey team a 4-3 Great Northern Conference victory at Waupaca.
“I was really proud of all of our guys,” said Hodags head coach MJ Laggis.
RHS led 1-0 after one period when freshman Conor Pequet scored his first career varsity goal.
Another Hodag freshman, Harlan Wojtusik, added two goals in the second period when the Comets also scored twice to stay within a goal going into the final 17 minutes.
“It was great to see two freshmen in Conor Pequet and Harlan Wojtusik factoring in our scoring,” Laggis said. “Pequet got his first (goal) and Wojtusik notched his third of the season.”
Waupaca was able to tie the game with less than 5 minutes left in the third period before Pequet put in the game-winning goal.
“That tying goal to make it 3-3 could have been a backbreaker for us, especially after leading the entire game and then having it tied with them having the momentum,” Laggis said. “Our bench responded well at that moment, from our captains to the rest of the team. We set a tone that we were going to go get the game.”
Seth Stafford recorded the win in net for the RHS.
“Sophomore goaltender Seth Stafford has now strung two really good games together, and that’s big for us,” Laggis said. “As a freshman he wasn’t able to do that very often. He has to keep it going.”
The win improved the Hodags’ season record to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in the GNC going into Tuesday’s conference game at Mosinee.
Hodags 4, Waupaca 3
