A big event next weekend will make a big difference in lives of Northwoods children facing adversity. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwestern Wisconsin is holding its annual fundraiser, Bowl for Kids’ Sake, April 2 at Hodag Lanes.
“We help children that are facing adversity – by matching them with a Big (mentor or volunteer) that can help provide them with support, guidance, stability, friendship, and attention,” said BBBS local Marketing Coordinator Nicky Lindman.
Adversity, she said, comes in all forms, poverty, divorce, drugs, alcohol and bullying to name a few. “We have many children being raised by their grandparents, or in a single parent home – sometimes children just need another role model in their life – sometimes our kids need cheerleaders, someone to encourage and cheer them on in childhood, school years and beyond!”
Lindman said great local support and generous business sponsors has gotten Bowl for Kids’ Sake off to a good start. the events will include plenty of music, crazy games, raffle prizes, but absolutely no serious bowling will be allowed.
“There will be a combination of adults and kids, business and family teams – a mix of everything and everybody,” she continued. “This year’s theme is Hollywood, Strikes! Camera! Action! Some will come in costumes, but all will walk our purple carpet on their way to our star studded event.”
All the money raised with stay in the Northwoods chapter of BBBS to help support matches. The group will be adding another match support specialist in the Rhinelander area, to help more Northwoods children
“We know from research that giving children money or “things” doesn’t always change their outcome,” Lindman explained. “But a mentor or Big in their life has the ability to show children a different life is possible and a Big has the best chance of redirecting or changing the outcome for our Littles. Bigs make a difference!”
Bowl for Kids Sake has two shifts, 2 and 5:30 p.m., April 2 at Hodag Lanes. For more information, visit bbbsnw.org or call 800-648-1696.
