Obituary: Kurt Sampson
Kurt Sampson, 76, died October 22, 2014. While his body has left us, his spirit will linger. Kurt was born June 17, 1938 to Gladys (Lewis) and Elmer Sampson at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rhinelander. He graduated from Rhinelander High School in June, 1956 and then attended what was then Wisconsin State University-Oshkosh. He subsequently spent three years in the U.S. Army Security Agency as a military policeman. Following his military career he attended and graduated from Lakeland College in Plymouth. Following graduation Kurt taught at Plymouth Middle School and then attended Bangor Theological Seminary in Bangor, Maine. Upon completion of his theological studies, Kurt served as an interim pastor at Congregational Church in Owen. He then returned to Rhinelander and was employed in a number of local businesses, served as a substitute teacher and worked at the Blackwell Job Corp Center.
Kurt was preceded in death by his parents, and is survived by his younger brother, Chris, of Indonesia; and a number of cousins and other relatives. He will be missed by friends as well as members of his church family at First Congregational United Church of Christ in Rhinelander. A memorial service will be held at First Congregational United Church of Christ in Rhinelander at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 20. Kurt will be missed by all who knew him.
