Flu shots are the Single Best Way to Protect Against the Flu
The Oneida County Health Department will begin vaccinating people against influenza starting Sept. 9 at the Oneida County Health Department. Hours of operation for flu shots are: Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Two types of vaccines are available, the flu shot and the nasal spray.
The three flu vaccines available from the health department are:
· A regular shot approved for individuals 6 months and older, regular flu shots are safe for pregnant women and individuals with chronic health conditions.
· A high dose shot for individuals 65 years and older, the high dose shot contains four times the amount of antigen, than the regular flu shot. This additional antigen is intended to create a stronger immune response for elderly individuals.
· The nasal spray is available for healthy individuals 2 through 49 years of age, who are not pregnant.
Symptoms of Influenza illness include fever, headache, non-productive cough, sore throat, and runny nose. Other complications could include pneumonia, ear infections, or sinus infections. People who have underlying medical conditions are at greater risk to these complications.
Each year the flu vaccine changes based on surveillance and scientists’ estimations about which type and strain will circulate. About two weeks after vaccination, antibodies provide protection against influenza.
Anyone who wants to reduce their chances of getting the flu should get vaccinated. It is recommended that all people six months and older get a flu shot. Certain people are at higher risk of complications from the flu. Those people include Children age six months to 18 years, pregnant women, people 50 years and older, anyone with chronic medical conditions, and people who live in nursing homes.
The best way to protect yourself from getting the flu is to practice good hygiene, get your flu shot each year, stay home when you are sick, and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Appointments are NOT necessary for flu shots at the Oneida County Health Department in the months of September and October.
The Oneida County Health Department is located on the second floor in the Health and Aging building next to Trigs in Rhinelander.
