The "Questionable?" column of the Dec. 7 issue of the Hodag Buyers' Guide pertained to the existence of wild hogs in Oneida County. It brought back a memory from the early 1990s.
At 2 p.m. on a sunny afternoon, my husband and his two adult children were in the car with me northbound from Rhinelander on Hwy 47. To our amazement, a strange animal ran across the road approximately 90 yards in front of us. By pooling the details each of us had noticed, we came to the conclusion that it was a wild hog. I reported it to both the DNR and the Oneida County Sheriff's Department, and in both instances was laughed right off the phone. It sounds like the DNR is now acknowledging that there were some feral hogs in Oneida County as of a few years ago.
On telling of the incident at work the next day, I heard that three exotic Russian boars had escaped from an area game farm and not all of them had been recaptured.
I had the last laugh.
