UPDATE: Snowmobile trails will NOT open

After announcing Thursday that Oneida County snowmobile trails will open, the county Snowmobile Council has decided to keep the trail system closed until further notice.

Council members reportedly made the decision after further consideration and evaluation of trail conditions.

Against Forestry, Land and Recreation Department recommendations, the council voted 7-2 Jan. 7 to open the trails, which were reported by the department as in "extremely rough, early season condition." The Oneida County Snowmobile Council apologized for any inconvenience caused, but said it is the right decision.
