Upcoming Canning Classes Announced

Oneida County UW-Extension announces two canning classes to be offered in partnership with the School District of Rhinelander Community Education program.

A Canning 101: Basics of Home Canning will be offered Saturday, Sept. 7, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Rhinelander High School F&CE room. This class will cover basic water bath canning for jams/jellies, fruit, pickles, salsas and other high-acid food. It will offer both beginners and those with experience canning the opportunity to learn and review the basics skills and equipment necessary to ensure preservation of safe, high quality food for your family to enjoy year round.

A pressure canning class will be offered Saturday, Sept. 21, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., also at the Rhinelander High School. This class will focus on safely using a pressure canner to preserve meats and other low-acid foods, such vegetable and meats, including venison and other wild game. This class is for those with experience water bath canning and some pressure canning to ensure safe food preservation at home. The pressure canning class will cover the basics such as the differences between a pressure canner and pressure cooker, a weighted gauge and dial gauge canner, and appropriate recipes for use in pressure canning. Hands-on experience focusing on meat processing will help individuals gain confidence working with a pressure canner in their own kitchen.
