Rhinelander Lions offer thanks to the community

Editor,

The Rhinelander Lions Club thanks Downtown Rhinelander, Rhinelander Community Foundation, Lights of the Northwoods, city of Rhinelander, Howard Backe and the private residents and businesses for the wonderful Christmas light display and events this season. From one end of town to the other, there were plenty of opportunities for the community and visitors to enjoy the lighting efforts of these organizations. In addition, the Lions thank the community for volunteering and participating in the Lions Community Christmas Day Dinner which served over 300 dinners. The Lions look forward to the continued support of the community so these organizations can maintain and expand their efforts in years to come and maybe one day, those Hodags that were lit up in Hodag Park will truly take flight if the community Christmas spirit continues.

Reader suggests change in unemployment benefits

Editor,

The loss of the Petco jobs in Rhinelander is terrible news for those affected. In State Sen. Tiffany’s newsletter he expressed a desire to help any way he could. One measure would be a bill that eliminates the first waiting week for unemployment benefits.

I’ve never understood this rule that he voted for, why not just cut the weeks from 26 to 25. Why are we punishing someone who just lost their source of income and not helping them when they need it the most?

With unemployment at record lows now is a good time to correct this mistake.
