Rhinelander students selected for leadership awards

Carmen Ibarra and Emma Squires were recently recognized by members of GFWC-Rhinelander Woman’s Club for being recipients of the Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership (HOBY) Seminar award and the World Affairs Seminar award, both of which are sponsored by the club.

Founded in 1958, the HOBY seminar’s mission is to inspire youth toward leadership, service, and innovation. Programs provide selected students with leadership training, service-learning and motivation-building experiences.

Sophomore Carmen Ibarra will attend Wisconsin’s seminar at Edgewood College in Madison on June 8-10. Ibarra is an officer for FBLA-DECA and is involved in Student Council, Key Club, National Honor Society, and Math League.

Sophomore Emma Squires will attend the 2018 World Affairs Seminar at Carroll University in Waukesha June 23-29. WAS began in 1976 to provide leadership skills and group problem-solving, negotiating, and interaction among diverse cultures. Students come from U.S. and international high schools. This year’s theme is “Innovation: Shaping the World You Will Inherit.” Delegates will explore traditional roles and new responsibilities for future international societies.

Squires is on the RHS dance team, in the band and is a member of the National Honor Society. Next year she will attend a semester at Conserve School in Land O’ Lakes.
