Rhinelander fire chief tenders resignation

Posted

One month after Rhinelander Police Chief Lloyd Gauthier announced his pending retirement, the other half of the city’s public safety leadership team, Fire Chief Brian Tonnancour, has tendered his resignation effective Jan. 16.

“It has been an honor and a privilege to serve the citizens of Rhinelander and to work alongside the dedicated men and women of the Rhinelander Fire Department,” Tonnancour wrote in a letter to Mayor Kris Hanus, city administrator Patrick Reagan and the common council dated Dec. 22. “I am grateful for the trust placed in me by the City and for the support provided by the City Administrator, Mayor, and Common Council throughout my tenure. Over the coming weeks, I am committed to ensuring a smooth and professional transition of leadership. I will assist in any way necessary to maintain continuity of operations and uphold the high standards of service expected by our community. I extend my sincere appreciation to the City leadership, department staff, and community partners for the opportunities, collaboration, and experiences I have gained while serving as Fire Chief. I wish the City of Rhinelander and the Rhinelander Fire Department continued success in the future.”

Gauthier announced his retirement in a Nov. 22 letter to Hanus and Todd McEldowney, chair of the city’s police and fire commission.

His last day as chief is Jan. 9.

Tonnancour has served as fire chief since November 2021. He was hired following the retirement of former chief Terry Williams.

“The Police and Fire Commission will be leading the search for a new chief, as they determine necessary,” Reagan told the Star Journal in response to a question about the recruitment process.

The commission is scheduled to meet on Jan. 9.
