Officials with the School District of Rhinelander and the Oneida County Sheriff’s Department have announced that a precautionary lockdown at Crescent Elementary School (3319 Boyce Drive) implemented earlier today has been lifted following an investigation.
According to a joint school district and sheriff’s office press release, during recess on Monday school staff reported hearing what they believed to be a gunshot in the area north of the school.
“Out of an abundance of caution, law enforcement was immediately notified, and the school was placed into lockdown to ensure the safety of all students and staff,” the release states. “Law enforcement personnel responded promptly and conducted a thorough search of the surrounding area, including the use of a thermal imaging drone. No evidence of suspicious individuals or activity was found. The Oneida County Sheriff’s Department canvassed the neighborhood, and no nearby residents reported hearing or seeing anything of concern. The school remained in lockdown for approximately 45 minutes. After confirming there was no evidence of a threat, law enforcement cleared the scene, and the school safely returned to normal activities.”
“At no time was there evidence indicating a risk to the safety of students or staff,” the release states. “The school appreciates the swift response of law enforcement and the cooperation of students, staff, and families during this precautionary measure.”
