The Northern Paddle & Trail Club has organized an intermediate paddle on Rhinelander's own Pelican River from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 10. What makes this three mile section of the Pelican special are the two rapids and riffle areas that are unique from the rest of the river. It is recommended that you have intermediate skills in moving water. The majority of the paddle will offer a slow moving current with a tree lined shoreline up to the first set of rapids. Depending on the water level these rapids could be classified somewhere between class I-II. A class I rapids is fast water with some waves and obstructions but easily negotiated, requiring little maneuvering, suitable for paddlers with some moving-water experience. Entering a class II rapids you should be able to read the river in determining your route and maneuver among awkwardly located rocks, while encountering high waves. If this sounds like fun, then you need to experience this section of the Pelican. Paddlers will meet at the put-in which is the culvert on Hwy 8, drop off boats/gear and shuttle vehicles to the take-out bridge on River Bend Road. A PFD is required on all NPT paddle events. New for 2025 - A donation of $5 per event is requested for non-NPT members which can be paid at the event. Membership for NPT is $10.00/year. Please RSVP jayjoppa1950@gmail.com or 715-499-1022 or the preferred method go to meetup>northern paddle trail and click on ATTEND.
