Our Turn: Sister Act!

During the weekend of Nov. 17, the School District of Rhinelander Drama Department produced Sister Act. The play tells the story of Deloris Van Cartier, who she saw her boyfriend, Curtis, kill somebody. When she told the police, they decided to hide her in a convent with a bunch of nuns! The story continued with Deloris and the nuns really getting to know each other and become close friends. I don’t want to spoil the rest so you should go watch the movie! I was part of the tech crew so I was back stage during every performance, dressed in black, along with the other tech crew, moving set pieces, props, costume pieces and helping the cast with quick changes and making sure they had their props. Being a part of the play was an amazing experience. I got to see the progress and effort going into making the play possible. I got to see shaky and unconfident dances become so amazing there were no words to describe it. I also got to watch the development of the lines and songs; actors and actresses go from knowing a word or two here and there, to having every line, lyric and dance step memorized and going above and beyond! As a techie I got to watch the show from the wings, and see everything from a whole different view. I got to see it from the side, the presentation the actors had for the crowd, and I got to tell them how well they did when they came off the stage.

Behind the scenes work, including set construction, plays a role in choosing a script for a high school musical or play.

I think this was the drama department’s best play yet. I remember last year, during Mary Poppins everyone was wondering how we were going to top it, then we did Sister Act! There were a lot of people who came and I am so thankful because without the audience there wouldn’t be a show.

We had a lot of seniors this year and I am going to miss all of them next year. Faith Bartelt, Erin Bloom, Carmen Incha, Andrew Padgett, Jane Kubisiak, Seth Bowen, and Cheyanne Dye all rocked the stage. I am very proud of them and all the effort they have put into each and every play they have been in. I can’t wait to see how far they go in their acting careers.

Overall, the play was amazing. We had a couple things that went wrong like forgetting lines or not having props on the stage, but we rolled with it and made it work. This was the second year we had two performances in one day, The first one was Annie Play Will Do, and even though we were tired, we pushed through and we made the second performance better than ever. I am very proud of all the techies, Shaun Timm, Emma Beckman, Riley Zarm, Karissa Thurn and Michael Bartelt. We worked so hard on changing the sets and making sure everything ran smoothly. I am also very proud of the cast and how hard they worked every day to make the plays great. I have been a part of one amazing sister act and I can’t wait to do it again.
