Editor,
I would like to thank the editor of the Northwoods Star Journal for reporting the news in and around Oneida County so accurately, concisely and in a nonpartisan manner. Your editorials address our shared humanity and values. They discuss what unites us, and not what divides us. That is also my message as I run for Oneida County Board.
My name is Kathleen Cooper-Loher, and I am running for Oneida County Board in District 6. It is a role that I take seriously, and I will represent my constituents honestly and respectfully.
Although we are all individuals with individual needs and preferences, we are also neighbors, a part of a community with common values and concerns, who care about each other. We care about the natural beauty of the Northwoods, and how living here contributes to our quality of life.
We care about practical things, too, like roads, county services, taxes, and zoning.
I am a wife, mother, grandmother and a retired nurse. I have cared for all kinds of people, listened to their stories, and respected their points of view. I plan to do the same for my constituents when I am elected to the County Board. In this age of division, there is much more that unites us than divides us. We are one community, living in a beautiful place. I intend to help keep it that way.

Editor,
I must respond to Patrick Wood’s advice for living a meaningful life [Publisher’s Letter, Jan. 12, 2022] which suggests that poor sleep habits, lack of exercise and little attention to good nutrition is desirable. These practices lead to some of the ills that Wood’s claims result from treating one’s body as a temple as many religious traditions as well as medical science advocate. Citizens who maintain their physical health often improve their mental health in the process. Those who are physically and mentally fit are less of a burden on others throughout their lives and provide better examples to our children. While I agree that extreme exercise and diets may be harmful, I view Wood’s approach to be more dangerous than taking good care of oneself.
