Local woman's club donates time, talent on MLK Day

The GFWC Rhinelander Woman’s Club joined the General Federation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC) in volunteering on the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service.

Sixteen club members met at the Oneida County Senior Center to make no-sew blankets for Operation Smile. The ladies made and completed 23 blankets and several others almost completed.

Operation Smile is an international medical charity that has provided hundreds of thousands of free surgeries for children and young adults in developing countries who are born with cleft lip, cleft palate or other dental and facial conditions. It is one of the oldest and largest volunteer-based organizations dedicated to improving the health and lives of children worldwide through access to surgical care.

The MLK Day of Service is a national effort encouraging volunteers across the country to join together for a day of community service. GFWC has prioritized volunteerism and community leadership in its 2018-2020 administration. The clubs serve their communities year-round, but this national day of service provides a special opportunity to join neighbors, family, and friends in taking action.

The General Federation of Women’s Clubs has nearly 80,000 members in affiliated clubs in every state and more than a dozen countries who work locally to create global change by supporting the arts, preserving natural resources, advancing education, promoting healthy lifestyles, encouraging civic involvement, and working toward world peace and understanding.
