Local organization urges voters to check status

The League of Women Voters of the Northwoods (LWVNOW) is encouraging residents to check their registration status following last week’s ruling by a Wisconsin appeals court judge that allowed the purging of more than 230,000 names from voter rolls. Election status can be checked on the Wisconsin Election Commission’s MyVote.wi.gov website. Choose either “Search by Name” or “My Voter Info” to search and follow the prompts.

If the voter sees a green button that says, “Click Here to Confirm Your Address,” that means the voter was included in the mailing the Elections Commission recently sent to voters it believed might have moved. According to the LWVNOW, voters who see a green button must click on it to confirm their address or click the gray button to update their address for voter registration online.

Considering national popular vote

LWVNOW’s January meeting will focus on the history and understanding the National Popular Vote movement. The only two elected officials in the country that are not elected by popular vote are the president and vice president. Dr. Dorothy Skye, president of the LWVNOW and currently serving on the National Popular Vote Committee with the Wisconsin League of Women Voters will present a program on the history of this part of the country’s elections and explain the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact and how it is permitted by the U.S. Constitution. The meeting will be held at noon, Jan. 14 at the Tomahawk Public Library.

The LWVNOW is a non-partisan organization devoted to helping voters develop educated political opinions and act upon them through the democratic process. It encompasses Florence, Forest, Langlade, Lincoln, Oneida and Vilas counties.
