Kenneth “Kenny” James Alsteen, age 81, passed away peacefully on May 23, 2026, surrounded by his family and the love that meant everything to him throughout his life. A devoted father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend, Kenny will be remembered for his stubborn spirit, unforgettable stories, rough-around-the-edges charm, and the fierce love he carried for his family every single day.
Kenny was born on December 29, 1944, in Rhinelander, WI to Ann (Gauthier) and Lester Alsteen. He entered this world alongside his twin brother and lifelong best friend, Dewey, beginning a bond that would last a lifetime. He grew up in Rhinelander, where he attended local schools and built the roots that would always draw him back home. Throughout his life, Kenny worked many different jobs, never afraid of hard work or getting his hands dirty. He eventually retired as a mechanic from the Ford Garage, a career well suited to his hardworking mature and mechanical skills.
Over the years, Kenny lived in Iowa and Illinois before finally returning to the Northwoods – the place that truly felt like home. He loved the woods, the quiet, and the simple kind of life that suited him best.
Kenny was a simple man in the very best sense of the word – a little stubborn, a little hillbilly, and proud of it. He didn’t need fancy things to be happy. Give him a fishing pole, a deck of cards, old country music playing in the background, and the people he loved nearby, and he was content. He had a quick wit, a sarcastic sense of humor, and a way of making people laugh without even trying. He could be ornery one minute and softhearted the next, especially when it came to those he loved most. Beneath that tough exterior was a fiercely loyal man with a heart far bigger than most people ever realized.
Kenny married his lifelong friend, Paula, in 1967, and together they welcomed their son, James. Although their marriage later ended, they remained close friends throughout the years, continuing to share deep respect, friendship, and care for one another.
Nothing brought Kenny more pride or joy than his family. His son, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were the center of his world. His face would light up the moment they walked through the door, and the love he had for them could be felt in every joke, every story, every teasing remark, and every quiet moment spent together. Whether gathered around the table sharing laughs or simply enjoying one another’s company, those were the moments Kenny treasured most. He loved fiercely, protected deeply, and carried his family in his heart every day of his life.
He is lovingly survived by his son and daughter-in-law, James and Penny Alsteen; his grandchildren, Brandon, Katrina (Marques), and Katlin (Chad); and his great-grandchildren, Ryker, Easton, Mason, and Remington. He is also survived by his brothers, Dewey Alsteen and Don (Sharen) Alsteen; his sisters, Shirley (Bill) Bickett and Sharon Alsteen; sister-in-law, Kathy Alsteen; and many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends who will miss him more than words can express.
Kenny was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Francis “Butch” Alsteen and Lester “Johnny” Alsteen; and his sisters, Loretta “Kootz” Voldness and Barbara Moore.
In honoring Kenny’s wishes, there will be no public service. A private celebration of life will be held for immediately family.
Though Kenny may be gone from this world, the stories, laughter, lessons, and love he gave so freely will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
