Jump into adventure, become a “Guest Teacher”

The shortage of teachers and substitute teachers is becoming a state and national concern. The pinch is being felt in the School District of Rhinelander, too. As we begin preparing for the 2016-2017 school year, we are looking for ways to make each and every school day even better, whether that day is taught by a full-time teacher or a substitute.

The best experiences for our students are had when a highly qualified, passionate teacher is working with them. We are so fortunate to have such educators working in our district. However, sometimes events occur that require our fine staff to be out of the classroom. In our continued effort to develop the best educational experiences for our students at SDR, we are extending an invitation to community members who are interested in working with students as a substitute teacher. There is a wealth of knowledge and experience that our neighbors possess and we would like to help grow this treasure within our community.

We are currently developing a substitute teacher pool that will be trained in the SDR way! Our vision is that a core group of substitute teachers known as our “Guest” Teachers would become part of the educational team in our district. The only requirements are a four-year college degree in any subject and a desire to help SDR students learn in a positive and productive environment.

Elementary and middle school candidates will be provided in-district professional development in math and reading instruction, classroom management, Positive Behavior Intervention strategies, and routines of the school/district. These opportunities will be scheduled as part of the back-to-school preparations at the end of August.

We would also like to provide the opportunity for our Guest Teachers to train at CESA 9 in Tomahawk August 3 and 4. This two-day session will focus on basic information regarding the substitute teacher role and guidance on the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction’s application process for the Substitute Teacher License. Upon completion of the two day program, a certificate of completion will be awarded. The cost for the training will be paid by the district. Our new group of Guest Teachers will be teamed with a building/grade level that they feel most comfortable with for consistency.
