The Rhinelander High School football team overcame a 14-point first-quarter deficit to defeat the Wausau East Lumberjacks 28-14 Friday night at Thom Field in Wausau.Wausau East struck early after forcing a punt on the game’s opening drive. Rhinelander quarterback Abe Gretzinger fumbled on the Hodags’ first offensive play, giving the Lumberjacks favorable field position. East capitalized with a touchdown pass for a 7-0 lead.
The Lumberjacks extended their advantage moments later when a pass intended for Rhinelander’s Cyrus Leisure was intercepted after Leisure was hit by an East defender. The ball popped into the air for an easy interception, and East converted the turnover into another touchdown for a 14-0 lead with 7:50 remaining in the first quarter.
Rhinelander responded with a touchdown in the second quarter and controlled the game offensively for the remainder of the first half, trailing 14-7 at halftime. The Hodags made halftime adjustments and dominated the second half, scoring twice in the third quarter and once more in the fourth while shutting out East. Rhinelander took possession with 4:44 left in the game, earned a first down and ran out the clock to secure the victory.
The Hodags will host Tomahawk at 7 p.m. Friday.
