Hodag Highlights: Sugar Camp hosts softball skills camp for area youth

Posted

The Sugar Camp softball fields were buzzing with activity on July 14 as 38 young athletes participated in a Softball Skills Camp, which provided instruction for girls in grades 3 through 10. Campers were divided into two groups—grades 3-5 and 6-10—to ensure age-appropriate training and individualized attention. Organizers aim to maintain a coach-to-player ratio of no more than 1 to 5, a goal met during the event.
Scott Beyer, head softball coach at UW-Oshkosh, led the camp. Beyer has guided his collegiate team to the NCAA Division III Championship World Series and holds a career coaching record of 221-104.
Former player and coach Maria Stave, who helped run the event, praised the turnout and the enthusiasm of the participants.
Throughout the day, players received hands-on instruction in hitting, defensive skills, situational drills, and mental preparation. Confidence-building techniques and strategies to improve the athletes’ mental approach to the game were also emphasized.
