Rhinelander’s first-ever American Legion fastpitch softball season got off to a winning start June 16 at the Hodag Dome, as the home team edged Shawano 8-7 to record the program’s inaugural game.
Shawano struck first, taking an early lead with the help of Rhinelander errors and some timely hitting from the visitors. But the Rebels responded in kind, using clutch hitting and smart baserunning to claw back and eventually claim the one-run victory.
Kendall Vanney took the circle for Rhinelander and went the distance, pitching a complete game to earn the win in the program’s first outing.
