The Rhinelander Rebels American Legion (U19) baseball team opened its home schedule Friday night, June 12 at Stafford Field with a 6-4 loss to Northwoods, a co-op squad made up of players from Eagle River and Three Lakes.
Charlie Johnson got the start on the mound for Rhinelander, but a rough first inning put the Rebels in an early hole. Northwoods plated six runs in the top of the first and didn’t score again the rest of the game.
The damage, however, was already done.
Rhinelander chipped away late, scoring single runs in the fifth and sixth innings before adding two more in the seventh, but the early deficit proved too much to overcome.
One bright spot for the Rebels came from senior Sawyer Bishop, who hit his first career home run at Stafford Field.
The Rebels were back in action Monday, June 15 at home against Antigo. In contrast to the first game, the team put on an offensive clinic. The final score was 15-7 Rhinelander.
