ALPINE SKIING
The Hodag alpine ski team was at Granite Peak in Wausau on a foggy day for the second race of the conference season Thursday. The team placed, as they did in the first meet, with the boys in second and the girls in third place. Senior Maddie Ewan was tops for the girls in 11th place and for the Rhinelander boys Lucas Bishop was in seventh place. Overall for the boys coop team, Jason Linn of Northland Pines placed fifth.
HOCKEY
The last regular season hockey game for the Hodags took place at Lakeland Thursday. The first period took place mostly in the Hodags’ defensive end of the ice. The T-Birds had 19 shots on goal to the Hodags three in the first period. Lakeland led after the first 2-0.
In the second period Karter Massey scored on an assist from Joey Belanger to make the score 2-1 on the only shot on goal from the Hodags. The T-Birds followed with another score to end the period leading 3-1. Joey Belanger scored in the third period to get the Hodags within one again, but Lakeland would tally two more goals to take a 5-2 win.
Goalie Tyler Kimmerling would make 49 saves in the game for the Hodags while the Lakeland goalie had eight total saves.
The two teams face each other again Jan. 30 in Lakeland to begin the conference playoffs.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Hodag girls basketball traveled to Stevens Point Jan. 23 and were defeated 57-47 by a Point team that is undefeated in the Valley Conference. The Hodags made only six of 30 3-point shots and the Hodags leading scorer Aubrynn Clark could only score six on the night.
Friday the girls faced conference foe Northland Pines. The Northland Pines Eagles were defeated by the Hodags 52-45 in Eagle River the first time the two teams met.
The first half was close until the closing minutes as the Hodags went on a short run and ended the half up 30-21. The Hodags opened the second half forcing a few turnovers and outscored Pines 12-4 in a short time and the lead stayed in double digits the rest of the way and finished with a 64-50 win.
Lily Treder led the Hodags with 23 point followed by Aubrynn Clark with 22. The Hodags have three games this week beginning Monday the 29th at home against Wausau East, Tuesday against Three Lakes and Friday the team is in Tomahawk to face the Hatchets.
