Local youth softball players got instruction from a college-level backstop last weekend, as Kaiya Fabela, a softball catcher at Brigham Young University, led a hitting and catching clinic at the Houg Family Field behind the Hodag Dome.
The clinic was broken into three sessions: one focused on hitting instruction, followed by two catching sessions split by skill level — an intermediate session and an advanced session.
Fabela, a 5-foot-9 native of Fort Worth, Texas, was a three-time District 6-4A Catcher of the Year in high school and was named to the Texas Sports Writers Association All-State team, among numerous other all-area and all-state honors. She signed with BYU as part of the Cougars’ 2025 signing class, joining the program as a catcher after playing club ball for Impact Gold. In her freshman season this past spring, Fabela was one of four freshmen on BYU’s roster, along with infielder Alyssa Grajeda, pitcher/outfielder Rita Tavita and infielder Irma Urincho, and was named to the D1Softball D100 Freshman Watch List.
