The Rhinelander High School baseball team hosted its home and conference opener on Monday, April 14 as it welcomed Northland Pines to Stafford Field.
The Hodags had to come from behind to defeat the Eagles 7-6. Conner Rappley started on the mound and left with Pines in the lead. Dylan Vanderbunt relieved Rappley in the fifth and held Pines to keep the home team within 2. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Vanderbunt singled to drive in a run. On the mound, he pitched 2 2/3 innings and held Pines runless. Vanderbunt also had three hits in the game. In the bottom of the 6th inning, Sawyer Bishop singled, driving in two runs after Rowan Wizcek reached on an error and Rappley walked.
Vanderbunt earned the win and had three hits in the game.
On Tuesday, April 15 the Hodags traveled to Adams-Friendship and won 11-6. The winning continued on Thursday, April 17 in Crandon.
The Hodags defeated the Cardinals in five innings 17-3. Dylan Vanderbunt picked up the win. He pitched three innings, striking out seven while giving up 2 runs. Vince White pitched the final two innings and allowed 1 run striking out 4.
Offensively, Vanderbunt and Abe Gretzinger had 2 hits each while Gretzinger, Vanderbunt, Conner Rappley, Rowan Wiczek, and Jackson Waydick each drove in 2 runs. Crandon pitchers walked 10 and committed 6 errors.
