The Rhinelander High School baseball team’s playoff run came to an end on Thursday, June 5 in Mosinee.
Rhinelander advanced to face Mosinee after logging a pair of playoff victories. Rhinelander defeated Amery 5-0 on May 29 and then traveled to St. Croix Falls where they earned a comeback win.
The Hodags were down 2-1 going into the top of the 7th but found enough offense to extend the game. Rhinelander scored 2 runs to take a 3-2 lead and then held St. Croix Falls scoreless in the bottom of the 7th to continue the season and take on Mosinee on Thursday for the regional title.
Conner Rappley pitched the complete game against St. Croix Falls to earn the win.
Against Mosinee, Jackson Waydick started on the mound and pitched into the 4th. He gave up 7 runs but only 3 were earned. Dylan Vanderbunt pitched the last 3 innings and gave up 2 runs. Mosinee scored three runs in the 2nd, two in the third and four in the fourth. Mosinee was aided by four Hodag errors. The Hodags scored a run in the 3rd and 3 in the fifth. Vanderbunt, Seth Nofftz and Sawyer Bishop drove in the runs for the Hodags. Bishop had 2 of the Hodags 8 hits. The team ended the season with a record of 13-11.
