Hodag girls soccer team shuts out Merrill in regional opener

A first-minute goal by Sydney Zettler was all the scoring the Rhinelander High School girls soccer team needed Thursday to win its WIAA Division 2 Regional opener over Merrill.

The No. 2-seeded Hodags scored three more times en route to shutting out the No. 7-seeded Blue Jays, 4-0, at Mike Webster Stadium.

Shortly after Merrill started with the ball to begin the first half, Zettler scored with an assist from Anna Sturzl.

The Hodags’ lead remained at 1-0 until the 33rd minute of the first half when Sturzl scored assisted by Alayna Franson. The half ended with RHS holding a 2-0 lead.

The Hodags didn’t score again until late in the second half when Franson broke away following a pass from Zettler and tallied a goal 79 minutes into the game.

Franson added another goal with an assist from Franson to close out the scoring in the 87th minute.

The win advances the Hodags to the regional final they will host at 7 p.m. Saturday against No. 6-seeded Marshfield, which won its regional opener Thursday over No. 3-seeded Ashwaubenon, 2-1.
