Hodag Country Fest organizers cancel 2020 event

Just days after getting the go-ahead from an Oneida County Board committee, organizers of the Hodag Country Festival have announced on Facebook their decision to postpone the 43rd annual even until July 8-11, 2021.

The post, signed by Gerry Van Harpen, Dawn Eckert and Dixie Nieuwenhuis, stated that though entertainers and many fest-goers were ready to participate, they felt the "safety of our community is more important." Also noted was the "stress and division created" in the community, something they apologized for, adding that was "never their intent."

Ticket holders were asked to hang onto tickets and camping permits and await further instructions.

The Oneida County Public Safety Committee voted 4-1 Tuesday to approve a large assembly permit for the festival, despite receiving overwhelming public opposition. National, state and local health officials advise against large gatherings.

Oneida County recorded its ninth confirmed case COVID-19 Wednesday.
