GIRLS HOCKEY: Edge comes back to tie Pines

After falling behind by two goals about 8 minutes into the opening period Monday night at Eagle River, the Northern Edge girls hockey team scored twice to force overtime and ended up tying its Great Northern Conference contest against Northland Pines, 2-2.

Northern Edge head coach Kevin Sandstrom said the team used its timeout while trailing 2-0 to settle down and relax.

“From there on out I’d say we were the better of the two teams,” Sandstrom said.

The Edge cut the deficit in half early in the second period when Gwen Frederickson scored on a one-timer with a pass from Payton Bunnell. Then with about 9 minutes left in the third period, Bunnell made a pass to Madi Losch, who shot the puck into the net from the blue line to tie the game at 2-2.

After neither team scored another goal with both goalies stopping all the shots fired their way and the overtime session ending in a tie, Sandstrom said there was confusion among both coaching staffs as to the implementation of the new shootout rule, for which the two teams will have a shootout prior to the Northern Edge’s game in Eagle River on Dec. 21.

Alicia Turunen made 28 saves in her first conference appearance in net for the Northern Edge.

The Northern Edge, which has an overall season record of 1-4-1, returns to action Saturday when the team hosts Western Wisconsin at the Rhinelander Ice Arena.
