Get ready for the Backyard Bird Count

Posted

The Great Backyard Bird Count takes place this weekend, Feb. 17-20. Anyone can participate in the count, which was launched in 1998 and recently saw more than 300,000 people submit their observations.

To take part, watch birds for at least 15 minutes on one or more days during the event. Write down what birds are seen or heard at the location and report the observations online at birdcount.org.

The site has resources for those new to birding to assist in identifying species. Information collected during the annual event helps researchers at the National Audubon Society, Cornell Lab of Ornithology and Birds Canada learn more about how birds are doing so those organizations can better protect them and their habitats. Pictured is a white-breasted nuthatch.
