Free Nicolet College Creative Arts Series events in September

The Nicolet College Creative Arts Series will feature three free events in September that will include a unique travelogue to the world's seven highest mountains, an art exhibit that peeks into domestic life in times past, stunning photography from around the world, and a Tech Talk on where to download free and legal computer software.

The specifics of each event are as follows:

Climbing Beyond Our Limits with Lori Schneider

7:30 p.m., Monday, Sept. 23,

Nicolet College Theatre

Join mountaineer Lori Schneider as she shares her experiences climbing the Seven Summits, the highest peak on each continent, and her ultimate quest - her 2009 successful summit of Mt. Everest, becoming the first person with multiple sclerosis to accomplish this feat. This is more than a climbing adventure, it is one woman's journey of moving beyond a diagnosis of MS and turning adversity into triumph. It is a story of scaling the mountains and obstacles we all face in our individual lives, and climbing beyond our own preconceived limitations. Lori's message is one of hope, leadership, big dreams, and self-empowerment.

Nicolet College Art Gallery

Examine the interplay of beauty and utility. The viewer is invited to appreciate domestic life in earlier times, including its aesthetic dimensions. The items on display are organized according to the areas of a house where they were typically used: the kitchen, the nursery, the parlor, the laundry room, etc. In an adjacent room in the gallery, re-enter the present through the eyes of award-winning photographer Karen Isebrands Brown. Isebrands Brown, who has been taking photos for four decades on four continents, sees the extraordinary in the ordinary and approaches her work with a childlike sense of wonder. Donors and contributors to the exhibit include Emily Homestad Bodensteiner, Janice Shannon Kanyusik, Katy Ralph, Rhinelander Historical Society, Second Hand Rose, Linda Arndt, Sue Bessert, Debbie Jircik, Barb Oestreicher, and Dolores Voss.

Tech Talk: Open Source Software Solutions - Free Software Alternatives from Word Processing to Graphic Design

Learn about two free software solutions that provide decent alternatives to expensive software packages: LiberOffice, compatible with Microsoft Office, and The Gimp, a graphics program comparable to Adobe Photoshop.
