Foster care event aims to bring Northwoods community closer to children in need

Posted

Next Sunday afternoon, May 3, a room at the Hodag Fun Zone (51 N. Brown) will be set up not for birthday parties or arcade games, but for a different kind of community gathering — one centered on some of Oneida County’s most vulnerable residents.
A project group from Leadership Oneida County, working in partnership with Oneida County Human Services, will host a Foster Care Awareness Open House from 12:30 to 2 p.m. The event, timed to coincide with Foster Care Awareness Day, is designed to lower the barriers between curious community members and the foster care system — and, organizers hope, to help address a shortage of foster homes that continues to strain the county.
What the open house aims to offer is something that brochures and websites often cannot: direct, honest conversation.
Current foster parents will be on hand to speak about their experiences — the rewards, the challenges, and the day-to-day realities that prospective foster families rarely hear about before signing up. Staff from Oneida County Human Services will also be available to walk attendees through the licensing process and answer questions about what becoming a foster parent actually involves.
Organizers describe the format as intentionally low-pressure. There will be no signup desk at the door, no obligation to commit. One aspect of the event organizers say may surprise attendees is the focus on respite care — a lesser-known but critical piece of the foster care system. Respite providers offer short-term relief to licensed foster families, stepping in to provide care for a few hours, a weekend, or longer. It is an option that allows community members to support the foster system without taking on a full-time foster placement, and organizers say it represents a meaningful way for people to get involved even if full fostering isn’t the right fit.
The open house is the result of a Leadership Oneida County class project, reflecting the program’s focus on civic engagement and community problem-solving. The partnership with Human Services gives the event institutional backing and ensures that attendees will have access to staff who can speak authoritatively about local needs and next steps.
