STAR JOURNAL REPORT
An offensive rebound and 2-point basket in the final seconds by Reese Flores broke a tie Tuesday and lifted the Rhinelander High School varsity boys basketball team to a 46-44 non-conference home victory over Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln.
The Hodags, who led 20-19 at halftime, held their largest lead of the game at six points midway through the second half after a 3-pointer by Brad Comer, but then were outscored by Rapids, 14-8, before Flores made the game-winning basket with the clock winding down.
RHS had only one player in double figures for the low-scoring affair with Michigan Tech recruit Owen White scoring 19 points and hauling in 11 rebounds for a double-double.
The Hodags ended up shooting 17-37 (45.9 percent) from the field overall, 5-12 (41.7 percent) from 3-point range and 7-9 (77.8 percent) from the free-throw line.
The win in the home opener, following the season-opening overtime loss four days earlier at Stevens Point, evened RHS’s overall season record to 1-1 going into Friday’s non-conference home game against Green Bay East.
