Bake-Off Challenge raises funds for Humane Society

Posted

STAR JOURNAL

A pair of eighth graders at James Williams Middle School launched a fundraising effort that not only raised money, but also gave students the sweet taste of competition.

A Bake-Off Challenge raised $742 for the Oneida County Humane Society. The challenge was the idea of eighth graders Max Kaether and Draven Klaver, students in Mrs. Cirilli's homeroom, as they brainstormed ways to give back to the community as part of the Character Education Program.

With Mrs. Cirilli's help, their homeroom sent out a challenge to all eighth grade homerooms asking them to participate in a bake off. Participating homerooms teamed up and  held bake sales during homecoming week. The team that raised the most money on their selling day would  decide to which local non-profit organization the team would donate the entire sum.

Students in Ms. Bowman's, Mrs. Cirilli's, Mrs. Erikson's, Mrs. Higgins', Mrs. Jorata's, Mrs. Pudlowski's and Mrs. Schommer's homerooms took part, with the team of Bowman and Schommer winning the bake off and choosing the Oneida County Humane Society.

The eighth graders are already busy brainstorming who and how they can help next.
