ONEIDA COUNTY – Residents of the Northwoods joined communities across the country to honor America’s deceased service men and women May 27. Originally called Decoration Day, Memorial Day is observed the last Monday in May. It originated in the final years of the Civil War, when people would decorate soldiers’ graves with spring flowers. According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, in 1868 the Grand Army of the Republic issued the Memorial Day Act, formally establishing Memorial Day as the day the nation would remember its war dead and decorate their graves with flowers.
Rhinelander photographer Dave Melancon visited several ceremonies held May 25 and 27 to remember the fallen soldiers buried in area cemeteries. Ceremonies were held at Union Grove in Harshaw, Forest Home and Nativity of Our Lord cemeteries in Rhinelander and Rhinelander High School, and Northwoods National Cemetery in Harshaw.
