Thursday night the Hodag boys swim team had its first conference meet at Tomahawk. Senior Charlie Heck was ill, leaving the team with only nine swimmers bit it did not matter as the Hodags won all three relays and eight individual events to defeat the Hatchets 108-40.

Zacha King swam the 200 yard freestyle and placed first for the Hodags.
Shawn Denis swam the breast stroke of the Hodag 200 yard medley relay that placed second.
Eli Lundt swam the backstroke portion of the 200 yard medley relay event that opened the meet. Lundt, plus Daniel Gillingham, Jack Antonuk and Mathias Fugle, placed first in the event.
Jack Antonuk won the 500 yard freestyle and also won the 100 yard breaststroke and was part of the first place 400 yard freestyle relay.

HOCKEY

Hodag boys hockey hosted their first game at the RIA Thursday night against the Tomahawk Hatchets. Johnny Turek started in goal for Rhinelander and gave up three goals on Tomahawk’s first three shots on goal.

The Hodags scored two in the first to go into the second period down by a goal. The Hodags then played more aggressively and smarter in the second period and scored six goals to go into the third period up 8-3. The Hodags would give up one goal in the third to make the final score 8-4.

The puck sits inside the net for the Hodags’ fifth goal as No. 8 Leo Losch begins celebrating his shot in the net.
Sam Schneider fires a shot that scores the second goal in the first to make the score 2-3 in favor of the Hatchets.
Layne Roeser slaps a shot that scores the eighth goal and sixth in the period for the Hodags.
Gavin Denis is pushed by a Tomahawk defender too late as Denis had already put the puck in the net for the Hodags’ fourth goal of the game and give the Hodags the lead for good at 4-3.

WRESTLING

Rhinelander wrestling opened the season at the John Roberts invitational in Antigo on Saturday. The Hodag boys placed 16th out of 19 teams with sophomore Sean Boman recording the top finish for the team in 4th place.

On the girls side, sisters senior Abby and Mya Swanson, a freshman, placed second and third respectively.

Senior Abby Swanson has her opponent in a headlock as the official checks for a possible pin. Swanson placed second in the four-person mixed weight bracket.
Freshman Mya Swanson works to get the wrestler from Wrightstown to her back. Swanson won her first match after having to wrestle boys throughout the middle school seasons and not scoring a win.
Senior Kyle Weise scores 2 points as he puts his opponent on his back.
