After school program to focus on Native American heritage
RHINELANDER – A free after school program honoring National Native American Heritage Month will be held at the Rhinelander District Library, 4-5 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 17.
Participants will hear the story of Thunder’s Hair, by Jessie Taken Alive-Rencountre, which will be read by special guest speaker Norman Crazy Thunder, and participate in a hair braiding activity.
Oneida County 4-H Educator Anne Williams said the program is being held in November as a way to celebrate Native American Heritage month.
“The program will include a simple braiding activity to teach youth about the beauty and importance of braided hair for Native Americans,” Williams said. “Bullying is the central conflict in the story, so participants will also be guided on what to do and how to advocate for themselves.”
Those interested in attending, grades K-6, are asked to register online by Sunday, Nov. 13, at https://oneida.extension.wisc.edu or by calling 715-365-2750. The program is sponsored by the University of Wisconsin-Extension Oneida County, Rhinelander District Library, and Nicolet Area Technical College’s Tribal Outreach Department.
